The other day, I was sitting with my 7 yar old son, Matthew, when he asked if his new gold medal was really gold. I told him no cause it would be worth so much so much money. At that point, he turned to me and told me that if it was really made of gold, he'd give it to the children's hospital to make the sick kids better. I shared Dawson's story with Matthew a while ago. Months later, I see the impact Dawson's story has left a huge impact on my family. Dawson's legacy is amazing.
Carla and Mike, you are two of the most amazing people I have ever met. I cannot begin to imagine what you are have been through and the emotions you continue to feel everyday. I didn't know Dawson very well but remember him as being a very content cute little boy that would play with his Lego Miners at Alex's hockey game, with a smile on his face all of the time. So I thank you for talking about your precious little boy when we visit. We love learning about him and his life. It is wonderful that you are celebrating his life and we are happy to take part in the events you have planned. Thank you for being you ...
A year ago yesterday (Feb 2nd) was Dawson's last good day outside of the hospital - before he got the meds to shrink the tumour.
He had skating at school that day. He was never a sweater but Alex always came off the ice just soaked. Dawson wondered why and I always told him that's just the way people are - some sweat, some don't - doesn't mean you're not trying. Anyways, he came off the ice and the sweat was running off his hair and he was so excited. Momma said it was the hardest she ever saw him skate.
After work that day, we got on the snowmobiles and went to the gorge. Besides just riding around, I would drive him and Alex up to the top of the hill and then they'd roll down it. For some reason, Dawson wanted to climb up the hill. And I mean, it was steep - so steep they shouldn't even have been trying to roll down it. He tried, and tried and would NOT give up - even Alex had quit and said it was too steep. I climbed up after him and boosted him but even I couldn't get enough traction to keep going and we never made it to the top. I'd never seen him that determined to do anything and wondered about it for a few days after.
He never did get back to school - he was too ill the next three days to go and the following Sunday, he was diagnosed.
It was in these three days, he built the Star Destroyer - all by himself. 3500 pieces - all in two ziploc bags - not organized like when you buy the kit and the bags are numbered to match the instructions. There were times in the evening when he'd ask my help to find a piece and I gladly did but tried to stay out of it so he could do it himself.
I wish now, I'd have just sat and watched . . .
On Saturday, as awful as he was feeling, he was a ringbearer with his brother in his Aunt Sandi's wedding. He performed all of his duties all day long, never complaining, and when he was done, he laid down in a room off to the side of the stage at the reception. He slept for a while and when he woke, it was time to go to the hospital. In true Dawson fashion, it was cool to ride in a limo and an ambulance in the same day.
Beautiful website Carla & Mike. And what a wonderful tribute to your amazing son. Dawson has touched the hearts of many. I just know that these events will be an outstanding success. Congratulations!
